Pear Juice

Pears are a hypoallergenic food, and are the only fruit allowed when on an elimination diet while testing for allergies.
When pears are perfectly ripe—not too soft and not too firm—they are the most delicious of fruits and, in my opinion, far more tasty then apples. This sensuous fruit has been around as long as poetry and love. Almost three thousand years ago, the great poet Homer spoke generously of pears as a “gift of the gods.” The shrewd Romans couldn’t argue with Greek wisdom, and instituted grafting techniques resulting in over fifty varieties of pears. Today, there are thousands of varieties, the most popular being Bartlett, Bosc, Anjou, and Comice. Most of the world’s pears come from the soils of the United States, Italy, and China.

Phytochemicals & Antioxidants in Pear Juice

Pears are higher in valuable water-soluble pectin than apples. Pectin acts as both a diuretic and mild laxative, and also contributes to lowering cholesterol. The good news is pectin is not removed during the juicing process as is insoluble fiber; in fact, studies have shown that drinking pear juice regularly helps maintain regular bowel movements.

Pears are a hypoallergenic food, and are the only fruit allowed when on an elimination diet while testing for allergies. A promising study done in Australia has revealed that those who eat pears on a regular bases have a lower risk of developing asthma. The high pectin and hypoallergenic properties make pears and pear juice the perfect first food for babies.

Pears also contain hydroxycinnamic acid, an antioxidant that has been shown to be effective in stomach cancer prevention. Research done by the United States Department of Agriculture is revealing that this “gift of the gods” is able to help in the battle against brain-depleting diseases due to its high levels of antioxidants.

Pear Juice Tips
Levulose, the fruit sugar in pears, is easily tolerated by diabetics.
Picking Perfect Produce
The sweetest and juiciest of pears are the Bartletts, with their bright yellow skin. Bartletts are available from summer to fall. Look for slightly soft flesh around the stem area. For juicing, a firmer pear is desirable so that you have juice and not puree.
Storing Your Produce
Keep pears for juicing in the refrigerator so they do not soften.
Taste Combos
The juice from a pear is thick and sweet and can be diluted with apple juice.
